African champions, South Africa are through to the knockout stages of the 2023 FIFA World Cup for the first time after coming from behind to beat Italy 3-2.
Le Azzurre took the lead from the spot in the 11th minute through Arianna Caruso, but South Africa penned them back through an own goal when Benedetta Orsi played a blind backpass which beat Francesca Durante.
In the second half, Hildah Magaia gave them the lead with a lovely lifted finish.
Less than 10 minutes later, they were pegged back though as Caruso turned in a corner from close range.
The game wasn’t done yet though, with Thembi Kgatlana slotting in from close range in the 92nd minute to get South Africa’s first Women’s World Cup win ever.
South Africa joined Sweden in the round of 16, and as the Group G runners-up, they will be facing the Netherlands on Sunday.
Italy were looking to make it out of the group stage for the second consecutive tournament, but they finished third on three points.
