André Stéphane Bikey Amougou has won his first trophy as deputy coach of Zamalek SC barely three months after joining the club. The former Reading FC sweeper, who joined the technical staff of Egyptian giants oversaw his side overturn a 1-2 deficit to beat visiting RS Berkane on Sunday night to win the CAF Confederation Cup for only the second time in their history.
The ex-Reading FC defender who was brought on board on recommendation of José Gomes to strengthen Zamalek’s defending had a real impact as the Egyptians shut their backline to keep a clean sheet that earned them the trophy on away goal rule. The reunion of Gomes with Bikey with whom he had worked at Almeria and Al Taawoun earlier in his coaching career was the turning point this season.
Bikey, 39, who penned a two-year contract when he arrived improved the club defensively thus enhancing their chance to win.
The sweeper who won 25 caps in four years for the Indomitable Lions of between 2006-2010, including featuring at the finals of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) adds his name to a rare list of Cameroonians coaches with a winners medal in the CAF interclub competition – joining the likes of CAF Champions League winning pair Théophile Abong of Union Sportive of Douala in 1979 and Oryx’s Samuel Missipo in 1965 plus Joseph Marius Omog who won the Confederation Cup in 2012 alongside Cyril NDonga of Congo Republic.
Bikey featured for 19 clubs in the globetrotting career that lasted 20 years and took him across Spain, Portugal, Ukraine, Greece, England and India.
Bikey who played 193 games in English football, scoring 12 goals also represented Espanyol, Lokomotiv Moscow, Marco, Panaithinikos amongst others has certainly created a huge impact using his experience to guide his players.
