Cameroonian footballers Faris Moumbagna and Jean Onana were subjected to a harrowing ordeal when they were targeted in a vehicle theft attempt. This incident took place upon their return from a match against Le Havre on the final day of the Ligue 1 season.

According to Europe 1 and RMC sports, the attack occurred on May 19 in the southern districts of Marseille. The players had just retrieved their cars from the Commanderie training center and were en route to their residences when they were ambushed.

The assailants’ attempt to hijack the vehicles was evident from the bullet holes found on the cars. Although it’s believed that firearms were used, the criminals did not succeed in their theft, and both players emerged unscathed. However, the attackers remain at large.

Both Moumbagna and Onana became part of Olympique de Marseille during the recent winter transfer window. Moumbagna, acquired for eight million euros from Norwegian club Bodo-Glimt, has made an impact with four goals in 20 matches.

Onana, on loan with a purchase option from Besiktas, was ineligible for the Europa League roster but has participated in 13 Ligue 1 games and one Coupe de France match, scoring once.

Both players played Marseille last Ligue 1 game against Le Havre where they won by two goals to one, a victory that, nonetheless, fell short of securing a European Cup berth. Moumbagna was in the starting lineup before being replaced by Iliman Ndiaye in the 71st minute, while Onana played the closing minutes, substituting Luis Henrique in the 89th.

Faris Moumbagna and Onana have collectively earned 17 caps for the Cameroon national team, with Moumbagna contributing seven appearances and Onana adding ten. However, the 24-year-old Onana has been omitted from Marc Brys’ selection. Consequently, only Moumbagna has been called up and is anticipated to participate in his inaugural World Cup qualifying matches.
