Back Council FC have completed a remarkable turnaround to become the inaugural champions of the Tiko Sub-Divisional Interquarter Football Tournament, overcoming an opening-day defeat before eventually lifting the trophy in dramatic fashion.

Back Council began their campaign on the wrong foot, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Newlayout FC in their opening match. Rather than derail their campaign, the setback sparked a remarkable response from the team.

They bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Costaint FC, before producing one of the biggest results of the tournament with an emphatic 8-0 demolition of Small Ikange.

Their impressive run continued into the knockout stages, where Back Council eliminated Casino FC before overcoming Boma Street FC on penalties in the semi-final after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The final against Water Tank FC was equally dramatic.

Water Tank made the perfect start when Kache Boris put his side ahead just 10 minutes into the match. Back Council refused to surrender and fought their way back into the contest, with Nga Jean Jacques eventually restoring parity and forcing the pulsating final into a penalty shootout.

The shootout produced another moment of high drama. Back Council’s Eteki Elombo missed his spot-kick, while Water Tank’s Fontem Jerome and Kache Boris also failed to convert their penalties.

Back Council ultimately held their nerve to win the shootout and seal a historic championship triumph.

The final and closing ceremony brought together football stakeholders, supporters and members of the Tiko community, with the Tiko Divisional Officer, Moukouri Samuel, among the dignitaries associated with the historic tournament.

From a 1-0 opening defeat to Newlayout, to an 8-0 statement victory over Small Ikange, a penalty shootout victory over Boma Street and another dramatic shootout triumph in the final, Back Council’s journey was one of resilience, character and determination.

The victory makes Back Council the first-ever champions of the Tiko Sub-Divisional Interquarter Football Tournament, earning them the championship trophy and a FCFA 1 million prize.

The tournament was organised by The Best Team under the leadership of Engineer Esunge John, Senior Notable of the Mutengene 2nd Class Chiefdom, as part of efforts to promote grassroots football, youth empowerment and community development.

Back Council started with defeat. They finished as champions. History has been made.
