Cameroon’s senior women’s national team will not take part in the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations after crashing out in the first hurdle of qualification.

With a 1-0 win at home over Kenya in the first leg of the first round of the Qualifiers, the Indomitable Lionesses needed to avoid defeat in the return leg but could not get the required result at the Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi.

Cynthia Shilwatso’s goal in the 75th minute for Kenya took the game into penalties after a 1-1- scoreline on aggregate.

Kenya won the battle of wills 4-3 on penalties and progressed to the second round of the qualifiers against the highly ranked Cameroon side.

Cameroon is ranked third in Africa and 53rd in the world rankings while ranked 28th in Africa and 147 in the world on the latest FIFA rankings released on August 25, 2023.

Kenya will next face either Gabon or Botswana in the second round with the winner of the two-legged tie making it to Morocco 2024 WAFCON.

Kenya’s sole participation at the WAFCON was a group stage appearance in 2016 in Cameroon.

Cameroon will not be heading to the WAFCON for the first time since their 12 straight appearance since 1998.
