Cameroon’s latest move on the technical bench may not have dominated headlines like a head coach appointment — but within coaching circles, the arrival of Anikine Frederic as goalkeeper coach is being viewed as a calculated addition built on years of international experience.

He is also one of two French professionals in the new technical setup, working alongside Dimitri Lipoff, as Cameroon reshape the structure around the women’s national team.

Goalkeepers often operate away from the spotlight. Their coaches even more so. But Frederic arrives with a résumé that has followed him across continents, shaped by one specialist focus: developing and refining goalkeeping departments in diverse football environments.

The 50-year-old French coach — who also holds Russian citizenship — has built his career across Africa, the Middle East and Asia, moving through club and national team roles where adaptability has been essential.

His coaching journey has included spells with Al-Hilal Obeid in Sudan, Al-Orooba, Comoros, Myanmar, and Equatorial Guinea, before later working in assistant coaching roles at clubs such as JS Kabylie and Al Ahli. He has also contributed to national youth setups, including Madagascar U23 and Les Aigles, before continuing his work across North Africa and the Gulf region.

That wide-ranging experience is believed to have been a key factor in Cameroon’s decision to bring him into the new technical project.

Modern goalkeeping has evolved significantly. Beyond shot-stopping, keepers are now expected to act as the first line of attack, organise defensive structures, and remain comfortable in high-pressure tactical systems. Cameroon’s decision to bring in a specialist with exposure to multiple football cultures reflects an intent to modernise that department.

Cameroon have never lacked quality in goal — a tradition that has produced strong names over the years. But in recent times, the rotation and transition between Cathy Biya, Michaely Bihina, and ANGE Bawou, among others, has struggled to deliver the consistency expected at international level. Even with the experience of legendary former goalkeeper trainer Annette Ngo Ndom, stability in that department has proven elusive.

Frederic’s task now is to help bring structure, clarity, and higher competition into a position that has long carried both pride and pressure in Cameroonian football.

His arrival also comes at a notable moment: for the first time in decades, Cameroon have brought in multiple foreign specialists into the women’s national team technical staff — a clear signal of a shift toward internationalised methods and modern football structures.

For a nation used to relying heavily on internal expertise, this marks a subtle but important change in direction.

Frederic enters at a time of broader restructuring within the national setup, where new technical appointments are aimed at refreshing methods and long-term development.

With the staff now taking shape — including Lipoff’s strategic oversight and Frederic’s specialist role — attention now moves from names on paper to impact on the pitch.

And in a department where Cameroon has historically produced excellence, the challenge is no longer about talent. It is about consistency.
