  • Fary Faye moved from lead striker to captain to Sports Director to head of administration and now the president of the club
  • Faye has vowed to make the club more transparent and credible during his four year mandate
  • Boavista is battling against relegation from the Portuguese top-flight championship and it is hoped Faye can make them a different proposition

Newly-elected Boavista president Fary Faye has promised to make the club great again via improvement of credibility and transparency during his era at the helm of the club.

The 49-year-old former striker of the club who was voted president by 99% of the votes this week to replace departed Vítor Murta is keen on improving the institution from the one he inherited in the relegation zone in the Portuguese Boavista.

Faye who played for the club before becoming their sporting director promised a better Boavista on Wednesday.

The experienced football man to make Boavista “credible, transparent and respected”,  the day after the unprecedented election for the presidency of SAD, responsible for the administration of ‘checkered’ professional football.

“That’s what I promise, in defending the values of our home. I have in myself, and in my team, the energy, competence, strength and confidence [necessary] to fulfill the promise and start a new cycle at Boavista,” Faye insisted, in statements cited by the ‘panthers’.

The former Boavista striker headed the only list that competed for the post of president of the corporate bodies of Boavista SAD was approved at the General Meeting of shareholders by Jogo Bonito, a company owned by investor Gérard Lopez and holding a majority position in the ‘checkered’ capital and he couldn’t hide his emotions.

“It is with great honor and a sense of responsibility that I take over Boavista SAD. I accept this challenge with the usual humility, commitment and determination, aware of the legacy I carry and the responsibilities linked to a position of this size,” Faye said.

Faye, who played for Boavista in two phases (2003-2008 and 2012-2015) and began holding management positions at the structure nine years ago has a lot to do between the 2024-2026 mandate.

Faye has a tough job of rebuilding the club internally and externally. José Carmelo Fraile and Pepe Roibas for example had resigned from their positions in disagreement with Fary’s predecessor, but are now back on the board of directors on the recommendation of Gerard López, who maintains three elements at the top of the board.

“I am fully aware of the problems of the present. I will never run away from them, but I also know that I will face a challenge of enormous difficulty.

It won’t be easy times, but I’m sure I’ll live up to the demands”, he acknowledged, in a season in which Bessa’s team had outstanding salaries in its structure and continues to face three seasons impediments to the registration of new players by FIFA.

Boavista occupies 14th position in the I Liga, with 31 points, three above the place for access to the maintenance play-off , and will visit FC Porto, third placed, with 66, on Sunday, at 8:30 pm, on Estádio do Dragão, in Porto, in the Porto derby of the 33rd and penultimate round.
