Katche Boris, the esteemed vice top scorer for the 2023/2024 season, is determined to lead Bamboutos FC of Mbouda to the prestigious Cup of Cameroon finals.
The 21-year-old football sensation appeared on STV’s sports show “La presse refait le match” on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, where he expressed his ambition to redeem the season after a disappointing league finish.
He stated, “I’m aiming for the Cameroon Cup to continue scoring. We’ve lost the league, but we still have a chance to win a trophy this year, and the Cameroon Cup is in our sights.”
In his first season wearing the red and blue, Boris has had a significant impact. The former standout from Little Foot of Tiko finished the season tied for second place in the league’s top scorers’ list with Richmond Nji of Victoria United, each scoring 17 goals.
As Bamboutos FC begins their Round of 64 campaign in the Cameroon Cup, they will compete against the third representative from the Northwest region. The team is relying on Katche’s exceptional goal-scoring abilities to progress beyond the Round of 16, improving upon their previous season’s finish.
Katche is the perfect fit for the 2023 Super Cup winners. Transferred from Rangers FC of Bafut after an outstanding season in Elite Two, where he scored 16 goals and provided four assists, Boris has not missed a beat.
Despite being benched at the season’s start by Ghanaian coach Asare, the striker maintained a positive outlook, waiting for his opportunity. In his words:
“You have to be mentally strong and keep working. I knew I had just come in; there were older players, so I had to work hard and fight for my position. Even though I wasn’t playing, I was working hard and praying for my time, and when the opportunity presented itself, I had to seize it.”
An opportunity he seized perfectly, with the 21-year-old scoring two hat-tricks and several braces among his 17 goals. His hat-trick against UMS of Loum revitalized Bamboutos FC’s campaign in the playoffs, with him scoring one of the two goals on the last day of play to help the Mangwa Boys retain their Elite One status—an achievement he is proud of.
“It’s been a great season for me, playing in Elite One for the first time. I was able to achieve my personal objectives because I really worked hard for it. On a personal level, I am impressed. Even though I wasn’t able to help the club achieve its goals, in the end, I was able to save the club from relegation.”
“My highlight was when I started scoring and seeing the results, being among the top scorers of the league. For me, that’s a great accomplishment. Coming from Elite Two to Elite One and maintaining consistency was a high point. The low point was the playdowns; I felt terrible. Knowing it was my first year with Bamboutos, I couldn’t let the team go down, so I worked extra hard to save the team.”
A standout game for Katche was his hat-trick against Canon Sportif in Mbouda, marking the first hat-trick of the Elite One season.
Beyond his successful season, the 2022 Elite Two top scorer used the STV platform to call for better officiating in the CTFP-organized competition and urged stakeholders to ensure players are paid adequately.
“What I want to see change is the officiating. Some referees are not helping the situation, and it really needs to change. The financial aspect is also crucial; you can’t play in Elite One and have nothing to take home. Clubs are struggling, and many of us have families and siblings to support. These are the changes I want to see before the next season starts.”
The world has yet to witness the best of Katche Boris Fon as the striker continues to improve day by day.
