  • Cameroon’s Under-17 women’s side suffered a 4–1 defeat to China in Morocco as they continue preparations for the upcoming World Cup.

The Lionesses of Cameroon suffered a heavy 4–1 defeat to China in a pre-World Cup friendly played on Sunday in Mohammedia, Morocco.

Cameroon’s captain Tiwa Lys Fraiche scored the team’s only goal of the afternoon, but the Chinese side proved far superior, dominating possession and punishing defensive lapses from the Central Africans.

It was the first game in charge for new head coach Josephine Ndoumou Mike who took over from Joseph Brian Ndoko just a week ago.  The young side struggled to adapt to new instructions and failed to match China’s tempo throughout the encounter.

Coaching change controversy

The change in the technical bench has sparked debate at home, with critics questioning the timing of the decision so close to the Under-17 Women’s World Cup, which begins in mid-October.

The Cameroon Football Federation has faced scrutiny after replacing Ndoko, the coach who guided the team to qualification. Media reports have linked the change to ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct involving members of the technical staff — allegations which have not been independently verified.

Focus turns to Morocco

Cameroon will have a few days to regroup before facing host nation Morocco on 10 October in their second warm-up match. The Lionesses are expected to play three friendlies in total before heading into their World Cup campaign.

World Cup return

This year marks Cameroon’s first appearance at the Under-17 Women’s World Cup since 2018. The Lionesses will be hoping to go beyond the group stage — a feat they narrowly missed in their last outing.

They will begin their campaign against the Netherlands on 18 October, face North Korea on 21 October, and complete their group fixtures against Mexico on 24 October.

Despite recent off-field challenges, the squad remains determined to make a strong impression on their return to the global stage.
