Cameroonian clubs, Aigle Royal of Menoua and Colombe of Dja will smile to the bank in the days ahead.
This after Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced every club that took part in the first preliminary round of this season’s CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup will receive $100,000 (approximately 56 Millions FCFA), regardless of their results.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe confirmed the development this Monday at the CAF General Assembly in Kinshasa, describing it as part of the organisation’s commitment to strengthening African club football through increased financial support.
The payment will go to both teams that progressed to the next round and those that were eliminated, ensuring all participating clubs benefit from the continent’s flagship competitions.
> “This initiative is designed to help clubs become more competitive and sustainable, both in CAF competitions and within their national leagues,” Dr. Motsepe said in a statement.
Under Motsepe’s leadership, CAF has seen a notable increase in financial incentives across its competitions. The organisation says these measures are aimed at improving the overall quality of African football and reducing the financial burden on participating clubs.
One of the beneficiaries is Aigle Royal of Menoua, who returned to continental action this season for the first time since 2008 in the CAF Confederation Cup. Despite losing 3–2 on aggregate to Ivorian side FC San Pedro, the Cameroonian club will still receive its share of the CAF disbursement.
The financial injection is expected to assist Aigle Royal as they continue their campaign in the Cameroon Elite One Championship and target success in domestic competitions such as the Cameroon Cup and the MTN Elite One championship.
CAF has also confirmed an increase in prize money for the winners of both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup this season — a move widely viewed as part of the governing body’s broader effort to make African club competitions more lucrative and globally competitive.
