Frenchman Herve Renard has refuted claims that he asked for an annual salary of 1.5 billion FCFA to coach Cameroon.

In an interview with acclaimed website Jeune Afrique, Renard who won two Africa Cup of Nations trophies with Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire affirms he never asked for a monthly pay of 200,000 €uros to lead the Indomitable Lions. Renard who’s currently in charge of France’s women’s national team denied ever having any discussions revolving around finances with Cameroon’s Football Federation FECAFOOT.

“I have not had any financial discussions with anyone. I met Samuel Eto’o in France, but at no time did we talk about money,” he stated, adding “I also read that I had asked for an advance on my salary. These are lies.” the 55-year old coach stated.

Renard unwillingly became part of a coaching controversy in Cameroon following the appointment of Belgian Marc Brys at the helm of the Indomitable Lions by the country’s Sports Minister Mouelle Kombi.

The move sparked a rift between the country’s football federation Fecafoot and the Sports Ministry with the former having suggested a shortlist of three including Herve Renard, Jose Peseiro and Fabio Cannavaro for the five-time African champions top job.

Despite their scintillating CVs, all three options were deemed very expensive and beyond the state’s budget with Herve Renard reportedly asking for an annual (2.4 Million Euros)1.5 billion salary while Jose Peseiro was requestion 1.2 billion per year with Fabio Cannavaro the cheapest option quoting more than 930 million per year to lead the Indomitable Lions.

Cameroon’s sports authorities opted for Marc Brys who alongside his two deputies earn 40,000 € (26,300,000 Fcfa) monthly and will cost 480,000€ annually.

The financial request of Herve Renard purportedly tabled by Fecafoot sparked outrage as Herve Renard currently earns 400,000 Euros (263,000,000 Fcfa) per year coaching his country’s women’s football team while in his previous job in Saudi Arabia, he bagged home 1.1 million Euros (723,000,000 Fcfa).
