- Bamboutos FC of Mbouda players have continue training after the club announced their decision to abandon the MTN Elite One championship, citing unpaid financial bonuses and alleged manipulation of match results by FECAFOOT officials
- The club, currently 14th in the standings with 17 points, accuses the federation of orchestrating a campaign to undermine their performance and expresses deep frustration over governance issues in Cameroon football
Bamboutos FC of Mbouda officially pulled the plug on their 2024-2025 MTN Elite One campaign on Monday April 14 after the club’s management announced their withdrawal. Strange enough the players were seen training just 24 hours later.
The move to continue training without their worries been addressed has left many pondering about their next move.
At the heart of Bamboutos’ decision lies a financial impasse. The club claims it has been left high and dry, with key performance bonuses — including 50 million FCFA for clinching the 2022-2023 Super Cup, 25 million FCFA for finishing as 2023 league runners-up, and 15 million FCFA for their runner-up finish in the 2022 Cameroon Cup — still outstanding.
On top of that, Bamboutos alleges they have been denied their rightful cut of gate receipts and sponsorship revenue, a critical lifeline for any top-flight club.
But the financial woes are only part of the story. Bamboutos has leveled serious accusations against FECAFOOT, claiming a “conspiracy” orchestrated by the federation’s hierarchy to sabotage their campaign.
The club insists that match results have been manipulated by officials, effectively rigging the league table and undermining their title challenge. Despite exhausting all avenues of appeal, Bamboutos says their protests have fallen on deaf ears, leaving them with no choice but to exit the competition.
The mangwa boys warns that football is on a slippery slope toward self-destruction, citing dwindling stadium attendances and questionable refereeing decisions as ominous signs of systemic failure.
It remains uncertain whether Bamboutos FC’s withdrawal will be permanent, as clubs have often threatened to pull out of the championship only to continue competing later.
Currently, Bamboutos sits 14th on the league table with 17 points. They are scheduled to face Fauve Azur on Sunday, April 20, in Yaoundé, a fixture now thrown into doubt following their announcement.
