Cameroon’s sport minister, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, has received the senior national women’s volleyball team in his premises on Friday, August 11, 2023.
The meeting between this administrative head and the national team was to properly welcome them from their three month camp, taking stock of their readiness for the 21st edition of the African women’s volleyball championship.
Captain Simone Bikatal and teammates have been training for close to three months in Cameroon, Slovenia and Croatia, playing both local and foreign based teams. Out of the 13 international friendlies played, the lionesses recorded nine wins and four defeats.
A feat, Simone Bikatal is confident will boost their morals going into the competition.
“We prepared for a long time, played numerous games, we are ready to defend our country, the competition is in three days, we will do our best to retain our title” she explains.
Peter Nonnenbroich has his complete squad. A second batch of the delegation arrived early Friday morning, completing the first contingent who touched down the Nsimalen airport earlier this week.
With ample preparation time, the German tactician believes Cameroonians will get to witness the finest volleyball performance from the lionesses.
“We played more than 14 games, we did everything to get ready, we are three days away from the competition. I can affirm our readiness to defend our title, we have a great team who will play good volleyball”. He explains.
The African women’s volleyball championship opens on Monday, August 14 and will run right up to August 25 at the Yaoundé multipurpose sports complex.
For the very first time,18 teams plus titleholders Cameroon will compete for the ultimate prize.
So far, Morocco, Kenya, and Rwanda are the teams already in Yaoundé, with the remaining delegation to arrive this weekend.
