Tanzanian champions Young Africans SC have confirmed the appointment of Portuguese coach Pedro Gonçalves as their new head coach, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the club’s technical direction.
The 48-year-old replaces Romain Folz, who parted ways with the club earlier this month despite leading Yanga to back-to-back league titles and a CAF Champions League semi-final appearance.
Gonçalves arrives in Dar es Salaam with vast African experience, having spent eight years working in Angola, where he most recently served as head coach of the Angola national team. During his tenure, the Palancas Negras qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and reached the quarter-finals—Angola’s best showing in over a decade.
“Young Africans is a club with great ambition and tradition. I am excited to begin this new chapter and continue building on the team’s success,” Gonçalves said during his unveiling in Dar es Salaam.
Club president Hersi Said welcomed the appointment, describing Gonçalves as “a coach who understands African football and shares our vision for continental success.”
Gonçalves, who previously managed Angolan sides Primeiro de Agosto and Interclube, is expected to take charge immediately as Yanga continue their domestic campaign and prepare for the CAF Champions League group stage.
