Cameroon defender Mireille Tchengang has confirmed she will miss Tuesday’s decisive Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria in Douala, after failing to recover from injury sustained while on club duty in Luxembourg.

Tchengang, one of the regular back-up defenders for the Lionesses, had already missed the first leg in Oran, which Cameroon lost 1-2. In a message shared on social media, she explained that her injury occurred just a day before she was due to join the national team.

“I unfortunately got injured a day before travelling to join the selection. Despite intensive treatment, I am not fit to play. My heart and soul are with my country for this important match on Tuesday. Cameroon, victory, victory, victory!” she wrote.

The absence of the Luxembourg-based player is another blow for Cameroon, who are seeking a return to the continental stage after missing the last edition in Morocco — a painful elimination at the hands of underdogs Kenya.

To qualify, Cameroon must win by at least one goal without conceding, or score two or more goals if Algeria find the net in Douala. The Fennecs reached the quarterfinals of the last AFCON, where they pushed eventual champions Nigeria to the limit.

With the home crowd expected to fill the stands at the Reunification Stadium, Cameroon will be desperate to complete what would be a symbolic comeback to the African stage.
