The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced Yaoundé will not host Cameroon’s 2023 FIFA World Cup qualifiers matches when the tournament gets underway in November 2023.
The decision was made public earlier this week as CAF announced the record eight-time FIFA World Cup nation will host its matches in the cities of Douala and Garoua.
The Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) in agreement with the government and the national infrastructures management body, led by Joseph Antoine-Bell included the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium while submitting their options to CAF last month. Unfortunately, they didn’t get the expected clearance to use the mythical structure.
After weeks of evaluation, the Roumde Adjia stadium in Garoua, the Japoma Omnisport and the Reunification stadium in Douala will be Cameroon’s fief throughout the qualifiers campaign.
The historic Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium is a surprise exclusion given its history and fortress status for close to four decades.
The likes of the Kouekong, Limbe Omnisport and Olembe Omnisport stadium were not proposed as they have been reserved for other commitments and national teams.
The Indomitable Lions will open their qualification campaign at home to Mauritius Island on match day one.
Home games against Cape Verde Island in June, Libya in March, Eswatini in September and Angola in October will cap the commitment at home while all other reversed fixtures will be played on the road.
Though it counts for very little these days, Cameroon has an intimidating history in qualifiers matches at home.
The world cup record nation will be keen on making it to their ninth FIFA World Cup tournament though they are in a tricky group with familiar foes Cape Verde and Angola.
The top teams from each of the nine groups qualify directly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be played in Canada, USA and Mexico while the best three runners-up will play the intercontinental playoff.
