Samuel Eto’o Fils, the president of the Cameroon football federation known in its french acronym as FECAFOOT has signed a release ordering clubs in the men’s top-flight championship to pay a minimum of 250 000 FCFA as salary for their head coaches while their second tier counterparts receive 150 000 FCFA.

The move was announced on August 30, 2023, for immediate application. This alongside the players minimum wage first imposed last season in Elite competitions will be applied in the 2023/24 season.

Going by the release, players in Elite One must receive at least 200 000 FCFA as monthly salaries while their colleagues of the Elite 2 championship receive 75 000 FCFA and the Women on the books of Guinness Super League clubs receive 50 000 FCFA each.

The move is certainly a welcomed development for the players and coaches, though implementation will make it even more popular in their ranks.

Over the years, Cameroon based footballers have received peanuts as salaries but the ascension of Eto’o to power in December 2021 was an indicator of hope for a better standard.

Last season, less than a handful of clubs honored these directives from FECAFOOT. Some of the opinion that the body’s unilateral approach has been the project undoing.

A minimum wage for the direct stakeholders is a welcomed move from the Eto’o-led FECAFOOT, especially if it is proposed with a conscientious from the club, which will obviously enhance implementation.

Recap of present minimum wage for the 2023/24 season:

Elite One players : 200 000 FCFA

Elite One coaches : 250 000 FCFA

Elite Two players : 75 000 FCFA

Elite Two Coaches : 150 000 FCFA

Guinness Super League players : 50 000 FCFA
