Cameroon head coach Jean-Baptiste Bisseck says his players are fully aware of the stakes as the Indomitable Lionesses prepare to face Algeria in the first leg of their 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier this Thursday in Oran.
The crucial encounter at the Stade Miloud Hadefi kicks off at 7PM (GMT+1), with Cameroon determined to take a major step towards returning to the continental showpiece after the disappointment of missing the last edition.
“The players know what’s at stake”
Speaking on the eve of the match, Bisseck underlined the hunger and determination driving his squad.
“The players are conscious that it’s a crucial game,” the Cameroonian coach said. “They missed the last WAFCON; it’s a big motivation right now because they do not want it to happen again. It’s an experienced group and it will be a plus for us tomorrow.”
His remarks reflect a collective desire to make amends after Cameroon’s shock absence from the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco — the first time the Lionesses failed to qualify since their debut in 1998.
Experience and leadership at the core
Bisseck’s squad blends experienced internationals and emerging talents. Captain Gabrielle Aboudi Onguéné (CSKA Moscow) and striker Nchout Njoya Ajara headline the attack, while Falone Meffoumettou, Toko Njoya (Real Madrid CF), and returning goalkeeper Michaely Biyina add defensive stability and composure.
The coach believes this mix of leadership and youthful energy could be decisive against a disciplined Algerian side expected to draw confidence from home support.
Algeria’s quiet rise
While Cameroon seek redemption, Algeria approach the fixture with growing confidence. The North Africans have shown improvement over the past few years, advancing to the later stages of the last WAFCON and pushing eventual champions Nigeria in a narrow contest.
Playing in front of their fans in Oran, the Algerians will look to make the most of home advantage before the second leg in Douala on 28 October.
A test of mentality
For Cameroon, this tie is more than a qualifier — it’s a test of resilience. The Lionesses have long been one of Africa’s powerhouses, but the setback of missing the previous WAFCON has fuelled a renewed sense of purpose.
With a strong squad and a clear message from their coach, the Indomitable Lionesses will take to the pitch in Oran knowing that anything less than qualification would be another painful blow to a proud footballing nation.
