Cameroon’s André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and André Onana have been shortlisted for top honours as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled nominees for the 2025 African Football Awards.

Anguissa features in the Player of the Year (Men) category after another commanding campaign with Napoli, while Onana is among the contenders for Goalkeeper of the Year following a strong return to form at Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Shockingly, Bryan Mbeumo who scored 20 Premier League goals last season for Brentford and earned a move to Manchester United plus scored four goals so far in Cameroon’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign has been left out.

Anguissa among Africa’s elite

Zambo Anguissa, 29, continues to shine for both club and country. The Cameroonian midfielder was instrumental as Napoli clinched the Serie A title last season — their second Scudetto in more than three decades. His tireless work rate, physical presence, and tactical intelligence have made him a cornerstone in midfield for both Napoli and the Indomitable Lions.

He finds himself in a star-studded list for the Player of the Year (Men) award, featuring some of Africa’s brightest names:

🇨🇩 Fiston Mayele
🇨🇬 Denis Bouanga
🇪🇬 Mohamed Salah
🇲🇦 Achraf Hakimi
🇲🇦 Oussama Lamloui
🇬🇳 Serhou Guirassy
🇳🇬 Victor Osimhen
🇸🇳 Iliman Ndiaye
🇸🇳 Pape Matar Sarr
🇨🇲 Frank Anguissa

Anguissa’s inclusion is seen as recognition of both consistency and leadership. While forwards such as Osimhen, Salah and Bouanga have grabbed headlines for their goals, Anguissa’s ability to dictate play and control midfield battles has earned him plaudits from fans and pundits alike.

Onana’s resurgence earns recognition

Meanwhile, goalkeeper André Onana’s renaissance in Turkey has not gone unnoticed. After a difficult spell in England with Manchester United, the Cameroonian shot-stopper rediscovered his confidence and sharpness at Trabzonspor, where his performances have been key to the club’s domestic resurgence.

The 29-year-old is among ten nominees for Goalkeeper of the Year (Men), a list that highlights the continent’s depth in quality between the posts:

🇨🇲 Andre Onana
🇨🇻 Vozinha
🇪🇬 Ahmed El Shenawy
🇲🇦 Munir Mohamedi
🇲🇦 Yassine Bounou
🇳🇬 Stanley Nwabali
🇸🇳 Edouard Mendy
🇸🇳 Marc Diouf
🇿🇦 Ronwen Williams
🇹🇳 Aymen Dahmen

Onana’s nomination marks a personal comeback story — from international retirement after the 2022 World Cup fallout to reclaiming his place as Cameroon’s No. 1 and re-establishing himself as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.

Cameroon’s legacy lives on

Cameroon’s dual presence in these elite categories reaffirms the nation’s longstanding footballing tradition. The country has produced some of Africa’s greatest names — from Thomas Nkono to Samuel Eto’o — and continues to feature prominently in continental discussions of excellence.

With both Anguissa and Onana vying for honours, Cameroonian fans will be watching closely when CAF holds its 2025 Awards ceremony later this year in Marrakech, Morocco.

Should either player triumph, it would be Cameroon’s first individual CAF Award since Eto’o’s last victory in 2010 — a potential symbol of a new era for the Indomitable Lions.
