  • Unisport of Bafang says they will not participate in the Cup of Cameroon because of lack of funds due to non-payment of their subventions
  • Alain Monthe who was imposed at the helm of Unisport of Bafang by FECAFOOT as replacement of Donald Ngameni who was a critic of the federation
  • The draw for the for the round of the Cup of Cameroon will be made on Tuesday at FECAFOOT’s headquarters in Tsinga

Unisport of Bafang has opted to not to participate in the 2023/24 Cup of Cameroon citing lack of resources.

In a letter dated, May 6, the club’s president, Alain Monthe details their present state of affairs before revealing they won’t enter the competition.

“It’s with lots of regrets that we come to your office to inform you of our withdrawal from the coming Cup of Cameroon. As a matter of fact, our team is found in a difficult financial situation which makes it impossible for us to travel and move our players in these circumstances,” a part of the release read.

President Monthe further highlighted greater challenges which has led to the above decision:

“Permit me remind you Mr Secretary General we have not had any subventions since the start of the season. With this situation, maintaining the team in Elite Two in the circumstances we took the club hasn’t been easy.”

Unisport of Bafang writes to black-out of the Cup of Cameroon

Unisport of Bafang becomes the fifth club to publicly announced the non-payment of their subventions or enabling conditions- following the likes of YOSA of Bamenda, Bamboutos FC of Mbouda and Renaissance FC of Ngoumou and Rangers of Bafut.

Despite this challenging season, coach Roger Constantine Bep somehow achieved the minimum of maintaining the club in Elite Two as the third best side in the relegation playoffs in Bafang.

Given that FECAFOOT obliges clubs to affiliate for the Cup of Cameroon before the start season, Unisport will be hoping to get a favorable response to avoid further sanctions which goes beyond losing the game. Over the years, clubs that have absented have had to serve a two-year ban from the competition and it’s officials sanctioned.

While waiting for reaction from FECAFOOT, it is fair to say Unisport have always added impetus in the Cup of Cameroon and it will be missed if they are eventually absent.

The draw to determine the various Cup match ups will be done at 10AM on Tuesday at the FECAFOOT headquarters in the Tsinga. If Unisport’s request is approved, 63 clubs instead of 64 will be in Tuesday’s draw.

Last year winners, Fovu of Baham have been relegated from the top-flight championship following a disasterious season upon winning the Cup of Cameroon.
