Time for the return of ‘prodigal son’ Ondoa?

There has never been an ideal period to secure the return of forgotten Cameroonian goalkeeper Joseph Fabrice Ondoa Ebogo than the June 2023 FIFA international break.

The FK Auda skipper who hasn’t played for his country since September 2023 could be one of the goalkeepers named by coach Rigobert Song for next month’s FIFA international friendly matches against Uganda and Mexico.

Ondoa guided his club to their maiden Latvia cup trophy a few months ago and has put up a strict of interesting performances provoking calls for his return which Song resisted before the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

However, there has been an interesting set of events in the past few months. First Andre Onana who was the undisputable No 1 fell out with Rigobert Song after the first World Cup game in November.

Devis Epassy stepped in and had a great performance against Brazil, winning the man of the match award after the 1-0 win. Unfortunately he hasn’t had the best performance for club and country.

During the just-ended season, Epassy conceded 47 goals in 27 league matches. That performance can’t be satisfactory for the first choice keeper of a country noted for production of good goalkeepers.

With Onana suspended, Epassy unconvincing and Mbahbi Marcelin not showing any signs of progress Cameroon could run back to the keeper who produced unforgettable exploits at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

What Ondoa’s return can bring

Besides the goalkeeping qualities Fabrice Ondoa can bring to the Lions den, his return can appeal for more support for coach Rigobert Song especially from those who have been of the opinion that he should have been in the team all these years.

Ondoa last played for Cameroon in a 1-0 win in an international friendly against Nigeria in September 2021 in Austria.
