Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, were forced into an emergency landing in Luanda, Angola, on Saturday after a major crack developed in the windshield of their aircraft — just 25 minutes after takeoff.

The squad had departed Luanda following a refueling stop, en route from South Africa, where they earned a 2–1 win over Lesotho in Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Emergency Response

The pilot of the ValueJet-chartered plane acted swiftly, returning to Luanda safely. All on board — players, technical staff, officials — are reported to be unharmed.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the incident, stating that the crack in the windscreen necessitated the diversion. The team is now stranded in Luanda as efforts are made to arrange a replacement flight home.

“We are working with the airline and relevant authorities to bring the team home safely and quickly,” an NFF official said on Saturday.

Monday’s Clash with Benin in Jeopardy ?

The disruption presents a serious obstacle ahead of Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifying game — a crucial fixture against Benin Republic on Monday in Uyo.

While the victory over Lesotho kept Nigeria’s ambitions alive, the delay now threatens their preparation, rest time, and logistical planning for the Benin match.

Key Concerns

  • Training sessions in Uyo may have to be shortened, postponed or cancelled entirely.
  • Players may suffer from fatigue and mental stress due to the unexpected travel disruption.
  • Manager Finidi George and his staff may have limited scope to refine tactics or impose fresh adjustments after the Lesotho result.

What’s Next?

To salvage the situation, the NFF is reportedly coordinating with Nigeria’s aviation authorities and governmental offices to secure overflight and landing approvals. A replacement aircraft may be flown in from Lagos to collect the delegation in Luanda.

The match against Benin — scheduled for Monday, 14 October — may come under pressure for rescheduling, given the exceptional circumstances.
