Senegalese forward Sadio Mané has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on one of the greatest careers in African football history.

The 34-year-old leaves the Teranga Lions as the country’s all-time leading scorer after an illustrious international career that spanned more than a decade.

Mané bows out having scored 54 goals and provided 29 assists for Senegal, while playing a pivotal role in the nation’s golden era.

His crowning achievement came in 2022, when he inspired Senegal to its maiden Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star also finished as an AFCON runner-up twice and was named the tournament’s Best Player on two occasions.

On the continental stage, Mané’s individual brilliance was further recognised with two CAF African Footballer of the Year awards, cementing his place among Africa’s football greats.

Beyond his statistics and trophies, Mané was widely admired for his leadership, humility and commitment to the national team. He represented Senegal at multiple AFCON tournaments and FIFA World Cups, helping elevate the country’s status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

His retirement marks the end of an era for Senegalese football, with the Teranga Lions bidding farewell to a player whose influence extended far beyond the pitch.

As Senegal begins a new chapter, Sadio Mané leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered as one of the finest ever produced by African football.
