- Opopo have won their first Elite One game in 19 years
- The Elite 2 champions beat Fauve Azur Elite 2-1 in the season opener.
- Nji Richmond scored both goals for Victoria United in the first segment
Victoria United FC edged Fauve Azur Elite by 2-1 in the opening game of the 2023/24 MTN Elite One championship to earn their first three points on their return to the big time after 19 years.
OPOPO’s Richmond Nji scored twice for the newcomers while Juste Koulou got the consolatory goal for the host, whose finishing was their undoing on the night at the packed Ngoa-Ekelle Stadium.
Victoria on their return to the top-flight championship didn’t hold back against the more experienced Fauve side.
Coach Guy Berlin’s newbie pressed Fauve Azur deep in their half and broke through counters in the opening half hour, though they struggled to take their chances.
Nji’s trademark runs into the space vacated in the Fauve backline put the host in constant difficulties.
Victoria finally had their breakthrough in the 31st minute through Nji who pounced on a cross from the right wing to fire home a thumping header.
The forward added a second eight minutes later, sweeping home a low cross after Morel Abena mistimed his outing from the Fauve Azur goal.
The host fought their way back into the contest after taking one of their multiple chances through Koulou.
The second segment produced some lightening moments from either sides. However, they failed to score from their chances because of wastefulness in front of goal and good goalkeeping.
The game finished 2-1 in favour of Victoria United FC, largely thanks to goalkeeper Andre Ndanga who made six saves for the team from Limbe. At the blast of the final whistle there were joyous scenes in the Victoria United technical area as they won their first Elite One game since 2004.
The rest of the match day one matches will be played after this weekend’s Super Cup.
