Morocco are on the brink of making international football history after extending their winning streak to 15 consecutive matches with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Bahrain in a friendly on Thursday evening.

The late win, secured by a stoppage-time goal from defender Jaouad El Yamiq, sees the Atlas Lions equal the all-time record for most consecutive international wins — a mark previously set by Spain between June 2008 and June 2009 during their golden era.

Having already secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco used the international window for a friendly after their scheduled opponents, Eritrea, had withdrawn from the CAF qualifiers before the campaign began in 2023. The North-East African nation pulled out prior to the first round, leaving Group E with five teams.

Historic Form Under Regragui

Walid Regragui’s men have now gone 17 matches unbeaten — winning 16 and drawing just one — as they continue to build momentum ahead of a highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil in January 2026.

The last time Morocco lifted the continental title was in 1976, and expectations are soaring that the current squad — boasting a blend of European-based stars and local talent — could finally end the 50-year wait.

“This group is hungry,” said Regragui after the win in Manama. “They’re not thinking about records, they’re thinking about representing Morocco with pride — but of course, making history is always special.”

One Win From the Record

Should Morocco secure victory in their next international fixture, they will become the first national team in history to record 16 consecutive wins — surpassing the long-standing record held by Spain, who dominated world football in the late 2000s.

That Spanish side, featuring legends like Xavi, Iker Casillas and David Villa, went on to win both Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco’s rise under Regragui has been impressive, with the team also enjoying a strong showing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.

With the AFCON fast approaching, Moroccan fans will be hoping this record-breaking form translates into silverware — and that the long wait for continental glory finally comes to an end.
