Egyptian goalkeeper, Mohamed El Shenawy has been ruled of the rest of the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) currently happening in Côte D’Ivoire.
According to the national team doctor Mohamed Abou El-Ela the Al Ahly skipper and Egypt number sustained shoulder-related injury in the final moments of the 2-2 draw against Cape Verde Island which could keep him out for an undisclosed for a while.
“Mohamed El-Shenawy suffered an injury to the shoulder. The duration of his absence will be determined after conducting an X-ray scan,” Abou initially said before obtaining the results on Tuesday evening.
Mohamed Qotb Abou Gabal Ali popularly known as Gabasky who replaced him for the final moments of the game on Monday is expected to play the rest of the tournament for the eight-time African champions.
It is the second AFCON running that Gabasky as he is popularly known is called to deputize for El Shanawy within an AFCON tournament.
The 34-year-old National Bank of Egypt goalkeeper featured in most parts of Egypt’s running to the final at AFCON 2021 in Cameroon after El Shenawy picked up another injury.
Coach Rui Vitoria’s Egypt are through to the knockout phase of this year’s AFCON tournament in Côte D’Ivoire.
The Pharoahs are patiently waiting for other results to determine their eight-final opponents in the suspense-filled 34th edition of Africa’s flagship tournament.
Egypt are also sweating about the fitness of their ‘goal king’ Mohamed Salah who has missed the past two games and is expected to return only in the semis if his country gets there.
