Cameroon and Nigeria will face off in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the conclusion of their group games.

Indomitable Lions had a dramatic finish to their final Group C encounter with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Gambia to sail through to the knockout stage.

Rigobert Song’s side finished second with four points ahead of Guinea with the same point in third position while holders, Senegal won all their three games to top the log.

On the other hand, Nigeria also finished second in Group A with seven points, the same point as leaders, Equatorial Guinea while host, Cote d’Ivoire with three points will have to wait till the end of all group games to determine if they will make it out of the group stage.

The Super Eagles had the upper hand in the last five games between both sides with two wins while the Lions won one with the other two ending in draws.

The last time they met at AFCON was in 2019 at the same stage as Nigeria under the tutelage of Gernot Rohr picked a 3-2 win over the Lions in Egypt.

The three time Africa champions went on to win the bronZe medal with a 1-0 victory over Tunisia.

The West African side had been having upper hand whenever they meet Cameroon at any stage of AFCON save for the final where the Central African side have been victorious over the Super Eagles on their way to winning the 1984, 1988, and 2000 AFCON.
