The Indomitable Lionesses will head into Tuesday’s WAFCON 2026 qualifier return leg against Algeria with renewed optimism, as Mogaï Djapa and Elam Ekosso join the squad to reinforce the defence, while captain Gabrielle Aboudi Onguéné returns from suspension to strengthen the attack.
Injuries to Mireille Tchengang and Easther Mayi Kith forced coach Jean-Baptiste Bisseck into late changes, with Djapa and Ekosso drafted in to fill the void.
Djapa arrives on the back of an impressive run with FC Ebolowa, having helped the Cameroonian club finish runners-up at the CAF Women’s Champions League UNIFFAC Zonal Qualifiers in Malabo. Her form and leadership have earned her a deserved recall at a crucial moment for the national side.
Cameroon face a tall task after losing 1–2 in the first leg in Oran, where Nchout Njoya Ajara’s late penalty gave the Lionesses a fighting chance. The return of Aboudi Onguéné, who missed the away tie due to suspension, adds much-needed pace and experience in the attacking third.
A 1–0 home win in Douala would be enough for Cameroon to progress on the away goals rule, while victory by any two-goal margin would also secure qualification outright.
The stakes are high for a team eager to return to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, having missed the previous edition, where Algeria reached the quarter-finals.
The match will take place at the Stade de la Réunification in Douala, with kick-off set for 16:00 local time. All eyes will be on the Lionesses as they look to reclaim their continental pedigree and keep their WAFCON dream alive.
