Controversial referee Martin Bomba has once again found himself at the center of controversy following his chaotic handling of the MTN Elite One Matchday 19 fixture between Stade Renard of Melong and Aigle Royal de la Menoua.
What should have been a routine league fixture instead descended into controversy after Bomba awarded an extraordinary five penalties, issued two red cards, and added 10 minutes of stoppage time in Stade Renard’s 4-1 victory over Aigle at the Melong Municipal Stadium.
Incredibly, all five goals in the encounter came from the penalty spot. Stade Renard converted four penalties through Moustapha Ngae Bissene (3’), Jean Simplice Mbang (51’), Junior Polla (79’), and Aboubakar Abdou (90+10’), while Aigle’s only goal came from Ndiforchu Blaise in the 47th minute, also from the spot.
The drama did not end there, as Aigle de la Menoua were reduced to nine men following the dismissals of Mistro Yamdjeu and Bolo Ele, further intensifying frustrations from the visitors.
Assistant referee Meyong Bienvenue was equally criticized for a series of questionable offside calls, with fans sarcastically branding both officials as the “real stars” of the Cameroon championship.
For many observers, however, the controversy surrounding Bomba is far from new and there are signs he is protected by people in high places.
Both Bomba and Meyong made headlines during the Elite Two promotion playoffs when he was involved in a shocking altercation with ISOHSA captain Arrey Jefta during their clash against Apejes of Mfou. In an incident that sparked widespread condemnation, Bomba headbutted the player during a heated confrontation, raising serious concerns over referee conduct and disciplinary standards in domestic football.
Earlier this season, Bomba had already drawn criticism after awarding four penalties in a single match involving Victoria United, another decision that fueled debates over consistency in officiating standards across the league.
His latest performance in Melong has now reopened discussions about refereeing credibility in Cameroon, with fans, club officials, and analysts increasingly questioning whether enough is being done to regulate and review controversial performances.
Instead of conversations focusing on Stade Renard’s important victory or Aigle’s poor afternoon, the spotlight has once again shifted to officiating standards — a recurring issue many believe continues to damage the image and competitiveness of the MTN Elite One.
As criticism mounts, pressure will likely increase on the refereeing department and the Cameroon Football Federation to address concerns over accountability, transparency, and match officiating standards.
For many supporters, Matchday 19 was yet another reminder that in Cameroonian football, referees too often become the main headline instead of the football itself.
