- US based Cameroonian marathoner Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy has sprinted into the Guinness Book of World Records.
- His extraordinary feat of completing the 2024 Tokyo Marathon in a time of 4 hours, 24 minutes, and 2 seconds, all while donned in the traditional “Toghu” attire, has set the record for the ‘fastest person to run a Marathon wearing native attire’.
- This historic achievement will be officially commemorated in the coming weeks when Fondzenyuy receives his well-deserved plaque from Guinness World Records.
A Cameroonian marathon runner Afowiri Kizito Fondzenyuy has made history by setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon in traditional Toghu attire.
He completed the 2024 Tokyo Marathon in the native “Toghu” dress pertaining to the people of the northwest region of Cameroon , clocking in at 4 hours, 24 minutes, and 2 seconds on March 2,2024.
The announcement on the Guiness world records website reads
“The fastest Marathon wearing a toghu(Male) is 4hrs 24min 2sec, and was achieved by Afowiri Fondzenyuy(USA) in Tokyo, Japan on 2 march 2024,
Afowiri has run five marathons in toghu attire. He made previous attempts at some Abbott world Marathon Majors races before breaking the record at the Tokyo Marathon “.
Fondzenyuy’s record will be celebrated at a special ceremony where he will receive his official Guinness World Records plaque.
Prior to this achievements, the US based runner had participated in 17 Marathons across four continent, covering a distance of over 673km.
He has earned the 6-Star majors medals after previously completing the New York, Chicago, Berline, London Athens and Boston Marathon.
Each of his runs has been for a charitable cause through his Amom Foundation. Over the years, this native from the northwest region has raised funds to help Ebola victims, autism research, building schools, among other things.
His goal in participating in the Tokyo Marathon was to raise funds to help in the reconstruction of the Tsenmah and Ndzenkov bridges in the Ngondzen community in Bui division of the northwest region.
According to Environment Africa, the Guinness World Records holder had stressed the importance of these bridges to the Bui community.
“I have a great passion for education, and this bridge will change a lot as children are completely cut off from schools when the rain comes. You can imagine missing almost a whole season in school because of a bad bridge; that is why I am doing it.”
“I can already see the joy and impact when the bridges are commissioned. I can imagine how it will change the lives of farmers, traders, and most importantly, school children.”
Fondzenyuy has expressed wishes to run on all continents, with special mention of Antarctica.
