Cameroonian forward Leonel Ateba Mbida was the creative force behind Al Shorta’s 1-0 victory over Al Karma in the 6th round of the Iraqi Premier League on Wednesday, providing a first-half assist to Bassam Shaker that proved decisive in ending their two games winless run.
Ateba, who joined Al Shorta at the start of the current season, has now registered one assist in five league appearances, underlining his growing influence in the squad. His precise pass split the Al Karma defence, allowing Shaker to finish clinically and secure the win for the visitors.
The 26-year-old is no stranger to top-flight football outside Cameroon. Before moving to Iraq, Ateba played for Simba SC in Tanzania, featuring in the CAF Confederation Cup final last season, and had a stint with USM Alger in Algeria. In his homeland, he enjoyed spells with Etoa Meki, YAFOOT FC, Fortuna, Coton Sport, PWD, and Dynamo, steadily building a reputation as a creative and industrious midfielder.
Ateba also boasts international experience, having been part of the Cameroon squad at AFCON 2023, and continues to be an important figure for the national setup.
Al Shorta will look to build on this narrow win as the Iraqi Premier League enters a competitive stretch, with Ateba’s influence proving increasingly vital in their push for the top spots.
