- Joyskim Dawa played the entire second half of FC Steaua București’s 7-1 win against Virtus on Tuesday in the first-leg preliminary rounds clash
- Three players; Darius Olaru, Daniel Popa and David Miculescu scored the seven goals for the Romanian giants to conquer on the road
- The second-leg game next week in Bucharest will be a mere formality as Steaua are almost sure of sailing through to the next round of the competition
Barely days after their commanding triumph in the the Super Cup, Romanian side FC Steaua București got off to a great start in their UEFA Champions League preliminaries this Wednesday. A hat-trick from Darius Olaru plus a double brace from Daniel Popa and David Miculescu ensured they take a 7-1 advantage from the first-leg clash away at Virtus FC of San Marino.
Though Cameroon’s Joyskim Aurélien Dawa Tchakonte failed to keep his place in the starting XI from the Romanian Super Cup win last weekend, he came on as a second-half substitute with his team leading by 5-0. A first segment treble from Olaro plus a brace from Popa had put them comfortably 5-0 ahead and cruising at the Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle before Dawa’s introduction.
Though FCSB still controlled the best part of the second segment, it was an improved second half display for the hosts who even got a goal for themselves via Manuel Battistini after Miculescu had scored twice for the multiple Romanian Champions.
Dawa was solid in the second segment and contributed to the 7-1 win. The result means FCSB manager, Elias Charalambous who has been in charge since March 2023 and led his side to their first championship win since the 2014-15 last season can likely switch his attention towards the next round of the preliminaries, even if Luigi Bizzotto, the Virtus manager who was appointed in July 2019 and won the club’s first league title last season will like to have his team do better in the second-leg game.
