Nkechi Obi Fails To Lift League’s Fortune Despite Much Promises

To majority of Nigerians, the ability to flaunt promises and back up with real or imagined illustrations is all about aspiring for leadership positions, even with no defined or clear-cut ideas and influence to effect necessary changes.

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), under the leadership of Ms. Nkechi Obi has no doubt been directionless in repositioning the Country’s women’s Football league, but suffice to say, like some other entities in the country, the leadership lacks the bite and courage to enhance reposition and fortune of the NWFL.

It is a sad development that the Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Board, Ms Nkechi Obi is leaving no stone unturned in her bid to destroy the already established structures of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).

In a bid to continue the boost and projection of the Women’s League positively, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) under the leadership of Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau inaugurated Board members of all the National Leagues in the country on a two-year tenure.

Nkechi Obi was appointed and inaugurated alongside Hajia Husseina Suleiman (Vice Chairperson), Hajia Rukayya Alaya, Mr. Danny Nazal, Mr. Ayodele Thomas and Ms Henrietta Ehiabor as members.

Ever since their inauguration, in 2023, no positive development was recorded under this Board. It is not a story that the NPFL secured a multimillion naira sponsorship deal ahead of the 2023/2024 season, same as the NNL, NLO, but not the NWFL.

Currently, the NWFL can not boast of a million naira sponsorship/partnership under the leadership of Ms Nkechi Obi.

Under the leadership of former NWFL Chairperson, Ms Aisha Falode, the league recorded a sponsorship of more than a 100 million naira in a league season. Similar case with the leadership of Madam Dilichukwu. But, It is a downward case under the present Chairperson.

Madam Nkechi Obi, since her assumption of office, has shown little or no regards to the NWFL Statutes, through illegal promotion of teams, abolishment of the NWFL Nationwide League and promotion of 10 teams to the NWFL Championship.

On the illegal promotion of Nationwide teams, the NWFL Congress had voted against such decision because there are no provisions for such aberration in the NWFL Statute as amended in 2021.

Up till this moment, there is no structure on ground on how the illegal NWFL Championship season will be conducted.

It will interest every genuine stakeholder that for the first time, NWFL Premiership went on a month break due to lack of funds. Something that never happened, when the Chief Operation Officer, Madam Modupe Shabi was in charge of the affairs. She managed the league effectively, and left a good sum of funds in the NWFL account at the end of 2022/2023 season.

No one would oppose any positive realities especially if the rules book gives room for such. But, the NWFL is in a state of figity.

The NWFL Stakeholders Forum call on the NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau to take a bold step by allowing an election into the NWFL Board where contestants can sell their manifesto to the Congress.
