DR Congo and TP Mazembe defender Djo Issama Mpeko, has announced that CHAN 2022 in Algeria, will be his very last appearance at the competition.

33_year_old Mpeko will be featuring in his third AFCON, after previously being part of the Congolese squad in the 2011 and 2020 editions.

Ahead of the leopards opening Group B game against Uganda on Saturday, the experienced defender highlighted the big role he has to play in his sides quest for a third CHAN trophy.

“Our objectives is to go as far as possible in this competition and why not add a third trophy,” Issama Mpeko said during the pre_match press conference on Friday.

“For me, it is my last CHAN as a player. I have had the opportunity to feature in the competition before. I was in Cameroon during the last edition but could not play because of COVID-19. My role is to help the team and show a good example on and off the pitch and my main objective is to win this trophy,” Mpeko added.

Mpeko’s experience and leadership, will be vital Otis Ngoma’s side. The former DC Motema Pembe, AS Vita club and Kabuscorp S.C.P defender, unfortunately was not part of DR Congo’s successes in the competition in 2009 and 2016, but is now looking to end his CHAN journey on a high.
