Cotonsport’s lead trainer Gabriel Haman says the decision to start Wassou Goue on the bench on match day five of the 2022/23 CAF Champions League was imposed on him by factors he can’t control.

Many question the decision to leave the 18-year-old on the bench when Coton announced their starting XI against Al Ahly SC during Friday’s game at the Roumde Adjia stadium.

Cotonsport lost the game by 4-0 which raised more questions about the coach’s decision.

Coach Haman explained the reason behind the decision during the post-match conference.

“Wassou took ill this week and only returned to full training on Thursday. We brought him into the squad and felt it was reasonable to field him from the second segment,” coach Haman said.

The teenage sensation played the last 30 minutes of the game. He replaced Kamilou Daouda when Cotonsport was led by 4-0 but did not have his regular stink.

Wassou, scorer against Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Hilal in Garoua is Coton’s lead scorer in the group stage of the competition this season with two goals in four games.

He could make a return to the starting XI on Tuesday when Cotonsport face Djiko FC in a delayed MTN Elite 1 championship game at the Roumde Adjia stadium in Garoua.
