30-year-old Geoffrey Kondogbia has been named in the Central African Republic(CAR) squad for the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder makes his return to the National team after over four years of absence, as he has been called back by coach Raoul Savoy.

Geoffrey, is part of the 26-man squad chosen to represent “les Fauves” as they go in search of a ticket to the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast slated for next year.

He earned his first call up to the National team on August 31, 2018 and made his debut on October 12 that same year. He captained the team back then to a 4–0 away loss to Ivory Coast in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

His debut and lone goal came on November 18 in the same competition, where he scored an added-time equaliser in a 2–2 draw away to Rwanda., yet failed to earn them a qualification.

The former Inter Milan player has been involved in almost about 16 La Liga games for Atletico Madrid this season and as a regular starter.

Geoffrey’s comeback plus experience will add the the other fine selection of players chosen by coach Raoul as they hope to pick up a very first ticket to the tournament scheduled for 2024 in Ivory Coast.

The Central African Republic will go against Madagascar on Thursday, March 23 in match day three of six in the group stage of the qualifiers.

CAR, is third placed in group E, level on point with Madagascar who occupy the bottom spot in the group.

Worthy of note is the fact that, the Central African Republic has never participated in the AFCON tournament. They have only attempted the qualification stage but failed to sail through to the final of the tournament.
