The 2022-2023 season was a breakthrough year for many young stars in the world of elite football. Eight of them have earned a spot among the nominees for the prestigious Cameroon Balon d’Or award, which will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023.
Atsama Franck of Bamboutos of Mbouda, Avom Arthur of Fauve Azur, Bembong Junior of Aigle of the Menoua, Edzimbii Patrick of Colombe sportive of Dja and Lobo, Messobo Gaspard of Apejes, Moursou Jean who plays for Cotonsport, Gazelle FA’s Nwatsock Calice and last but not the least Katche Boris who played for Rangers FC are the eight nominees.
All these eight players not only share their talents and skills as a common factor, but also their youthfulness, which speaks of a better future for Cameroon football.
Atsama Franck of Bamboutos of Mbouda is just 20 years old and plays as a center back for the mangwa boys. He was a key part of the team’s defense last season. With his solid tackles, smart interceptions, and agile movements, the mangwa boys were able to finish the season as vice champions.
Atsama scored one of the four goals in their last playoff game against Gazelle FA. He was also the 2022 October player of the month. He represented the U20 category for the UNIFFAC qualifiers, played with the U23 squad in the U23 AFCON qualifiers, and won gold at the Francophonie games in Congo. His recent achievement was his call up to the senior team. He was summoned last November as a replacement for the injured Harold Moukoudi.
Avom Arthur who is 18 years old, had a remarkable stint with Fauve Azur last season and won MVP awards at the Francophonie games.
His achievements continue to bear fruits even in his absence. The midfielder, who now plays for French side FC Lorient, scored three goals, including the winning penalty against Burkina Faso in the Francophonie games finals. He also played with the U20 and U23 squads for the AFCON qualifiers and participated in the Africa nations championship in Algeria.
Avom possesses the skills to create chances, distribute the ball, and defend. He successfully executed these skills with Fauve Azur last season, netting over eight goals and 19 assists.
Bembong Junior is another talent that captivated fans. The teenager holds the record of the youngest scorer in the first division. At 15 years and 291 days, he scored at the 90+1 minute, to give Aigle Royal de la Menoua a 1-0 win against Stade Renard of Melong last season. Since then, the youngster has been a regular starter for El Pacha. In a similar fashion, Bembong secured El Pacha’s first win this season against Colombe sportive.
As for Messobo Gaspard is a phenomenal and reliable goalkeeper who has proven his worth for both club and country. At only 17 years old, his nomination for the best young player award is well-deserved, as his remarkable stats with Apejes de Mfou show his consistency and quality. Thanks to his spectacular saves and confident command of the box, Apejes was able to maintain their elite one position. He also shone on the international stage, representing the U17 Lions in the African Cup of Nations and the Francophonie games, where he made more than eight saves to clinch the gold medal and the best goalkeeper trophy. Messobo Gaspard is a rising star and a formidable shot-stopper.
Edzimbii Patrick is a talented and versatile striker who plays for Colombe Sportive du Dja et Lobo. He has an exceptional eye for goal and a smooth finesse that allows him to dribble past defenders and score from any angle. Edzimbii Patrick is a star in the making and a joy to watch on the pitch.
Meanwhile, Moursou Jean is an outstanding and dynamic midfielder who plays for Cotonsport. He is only 18 years old, but he has already shown his maturity and skill on the pitch, earning him a call-up to the national team for the World Cup qualifiers. He was selected to replace the injured Kemen.
Moursou Jean is one of the treasures produced by the Cotonsport academy, which has a reputation for developing talented and disciplined players.
His versatility and creative spirit at the midfield as a midfielder was revealed itself last season in the absence of Kaiba Djawal and Felix Oukine. Moursou has also played with the junior national teams.
Furthermore, we have Nwatsock Calice who plays for Gazelle FA. With seven goals and three assist, Calice is the second highest goal scorer for Gazelle last season. The attacker who was part of Gazelle history making squad to reach the playoffs last season, was also named young player of the season by football magazine Griff 2 foot.
Katche Boris completes this list. The striker who now plays for Bamboutos de Mbouda in the first division, was the highest goal scorer in elite two last season. With a target of 20+ goals, the 21-year-old netted 16 goals providing five assists.
Voting is on, with public votes to constitute 20% of the final results.
