Hugo Broos’ South Africa have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 3–0 victory over Rwanda in Nelspruit, with goals from Thalente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis, and Evidence Makgopa sealing their long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.

It is the first time Bafana Bafana have reached the tournament through qualification since 2002 and their first appearance altogether since hosting the World Cup in 2010.

Hugo Broos’ side began the evening knowing that victory would guarantee their place in North America, and they delivered with composure and conviction.

Mbatha opened the scoring inside five minutes, igniting a raucous atmosphere at the Mbombela Stadium. Appollis doubled the advantage midway through the first half with a well-placed finish after a clever team move, before Makgopa rose highest in the 72nd minute to head home the third and seal a historic win.

“It’s a beautiful moment for the country,” said coach Hugo Broos after the final whistle. “We’ve been through difficult times, but this team showed character, discipline, and unity. We deserve to be at the World Cup.” The Belgian coach, who guided Cameroon to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2017, has transformed South Africa into a disciplined, competitive side that now looks capable of challenging the continent’s elite.

The qualification campaign was not without its challenges. In September, South Africa were docked three points for fielding an ineligible player, a decision that briefly threatened to derail their hopes. But a strong finish to the group, combined with stumbles from rivals Benin and Nigeria, saw Broos’ men reclaim control and finish top of Group C on 18 points. Nigeria and Benin both ended on 17, leaving South Africa’s final-day triumph as the decisive moment.

The win has sparked jubilation across the nation. From Johannesburg to Cape Town, fans poured into the streets waving flags and chanting “Shosholoza” in scenes reminiscent of the 2010 World Cup. Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa described the qualification as “a unifying moment for the country,” adding that “football remains the heartbeat of our nation, and what these boys have achieved goes beyond sport — it’s a message of hope.”

For South Africa, this qualification represents more than just sporting success. It is a story of revival after years of frustration and missed opportunities. With captain Ronwen Williams marshalling the defence, Teboho Mokoena dictating play in midfield, and new stars like Appollis and Mbatha emerging, the team now carries renewed optimism into the expanded 48-team World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Bafana Bafana will now turn their focus to preparing for the global stage, hoping to build on their solid foundation and make Africa proud. Their return to the World Cup is not just a footballing achievement — it is a symbol of resilience, belief, and national pride.

Bafana Bafana are back on the world stage.
