Ismael Saibari scored after just 70 seconds to give Morocco a 1-0 victory over Scotland in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, leaving Steve Clarke’s side’s knockout qualification hopes in serious doubt.

The goal, struck with precision into the corner of the net, was the earliest Scotland have ever conceded at a World Cup and set the tone for a match where Morocco controlled the early tempo.

Scotland, who had won their opener 1-0 against Haiti, needed victory to guarantee their place in the knockout rounds for the first time in a major tournament, but Saibari’s strike ended that dream before most fans had settled in their seats.

Scotland failed to register a single shot on target throughout the entire match. Their best opportunity came in the 64th minute when Ryan Christie, given space to strike from 20 yards, fired over the crossbar despite a brilliant setup from Scott McTominay.

McTominay and Lyndon Dykes went close in the 85th minute, while John McGinn got a shot away in the 88th minute but Morocco’s Riad was there to make a great challenge. Earlier, in the 45+1 minute, McGinn met Kyle Patterson’s cross on the volley but sent it high and wide, Scotland’s first actual chance of the game.

Morocco had several attacking moments beyond Saibari’s early goal. Inside the first ten minutes, Azzedine Ounahi nearly teed up a tap-in chance, and goalkeeper Angus Gunn was called into action again soon after, getting down well to deny Achraf Hakimi from close range.

As the half wound down, Bilal El Khannouss should have done better with a glorious opening, blazing well over the bar after Scotland’s defense was caught out.

Morocco continued to dominate territory after the break. In the 50th minute, a Moroccan cross bounced awkwardly off the crossbar with the goal gaping, and moments later Gunn had to be sharp again to deal with a dangerous corner.

The match featured two significant penalty appeals for Scotland that were waved away by referee Ilgiz Tantashev, with VAR supporting the decisions. In the 49th minute, John McGinn went down in the box under a challenge from Neil El Aynaoui after maneuvering past the Moroccan player, but it was deemed a fair challenge.

In the 82nd minute, Scott McTominay was also brought down by El Aynaoui inside the penalty area, yet penalty appeals were again waved away with VAR once more siding with the referee’s initial call. Scotland felt they should have had two penalties in the second half, and both decisions left the Tartan Army frustrated as they struggled to find an equalizer.

Gunn also had to be alert in the aftermath of the first penalty denial, making a smart save to deny Morocco the chance to extend their lead while Scotland’s frustration was still simmering.

The result leaves Morocco atop Group C with 4 points from one win and one draw (after their opening 1-1 draw with Brazil), while Scotland sits second with 3 points from one win and one loss. Scotland could slip to third if Brazil beat Haiti. Morocco now keeps alive their chances of advancing to their second consecutive knockout round.

For Scotland, playing at their first World Cup in 28 years, this defeat stalls their dream of a guaranteed knockout stage qualification for the first time in a major tournament. They face Brazil in their crucial next match on June 24 to determine their knockout fate.
