Jean Pierre Nsame watched on from the bench on Wednesday evening as his Swiss club Young Boys Bern outclassed Israeli Premier League side Maccabi Haïfa 3-0 to reach the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League group stage, following a 3-0 aggregate win.
Young Boys went through after two goals in six first-half minutes and Filip Ugrinic’s deflected effort less than a minute after half-time summed up proceedings.
Coach Raphaël Wicky men demonstrated their class at the Stade de Suisse, reducing the visitors to no challengers.
Goals from DR Congo’s Cedric Itten, an own goal Abdoulaye Seck and a Ugrinic second-half strike was enough to secure the clubs return to the group stage of the competition.
Cedric, the Young Boys no 9 who was in for Nsame thundered in a header to give the home side the lead after 23 minutes.
It soon was double trouble for the visitors when the ball inadvertently flew into the top corner of their net off the outstretched leg of the Maccabi Haifa centre-back. Nitzan couldn’t keep it out.
Ugrinic then rifled in from the edge of the penalty area after the ball dropped to the midfielder, his shot hit the back of the net via a deflection off Sundgren for the third.
Maccabi Haifa, to their credit, hit the woodwork three times – they head into the UEFA Europa League group stage.
Nsame settled for a place on the bench all night as coach Wick men demonstrated their class following the 3-0 win at the Stade de Suisse.
Young Boys will be in the group stage draw this Thursday evening.
