Legendary Cameroonian club, Canon Yaoundé have parted company with head coach Olivier Nankam as a response to a series of poor results in the MTN Elite One championship.
Reports multiple sources have it that the club and the coach have reached a decision to go separate ways and Nankam already wished the players goodbye after Sunday’s 0-2 defeat to Dynamo of Douala though no official statement has been made.
Nankam, one-time coach of Fovu, Colombe and Astres amongst others joined Canon in the build up to the current season with the task of making them more competitive and putting them amongst contenders for the MTN Elite One championship title. Unfortunately, that hasn’t gone to plan as the club has only amassed 30 points from a possible 60 this season and occupies the sixth position on the log – 14 points of pace setting Colombe of Dja.
The coach earned a 40% win rate as he won eight and played a draw in six of his 20 matches in charge will be temporarily replaced by Joseph Atangana who was already part of the club’s management though not in a technical position.
A cross section of observers have it that Canon’s problems are deeper than just the head coach while making serious recommendations.
“The managerial shortcomings at the club have been publicly manifested for several years and this season wasn’t exceptional. Hope we remember the drama of Nankam’s reduction to a spectator during some training sessions this season. These are problems that can’t be overlooked. Years go by but Canon Yaoundé’s problems don’t change,” football passionate Mballa Fabrice told kick442.com.
Canon will begin life without Nankam life without coach Nankam this weekend away to resurgent PWD of Bamenda before facing Colombe and Fortuna early next month.
Failure to win the MTN Elite One championship this season will mean the ten-time Cameroon champions and CAF Champions League winner will extend their barren run in the league to 22 years as their last title dates back to 2002 with Jean Paul Akono as head coach and Dieudonne Nke as one of his assistants.
