The Cameroon women’s national team have received a major boost in their bid to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after Guinea withdrew from the African qualifiers.

The withdrawal means the Indomitable Lionesses will no longer have to contest the scheduled October tie against Guinea, which was initially programmed for a double confrontation between October 5 and 13, 2026.

Cameroon had been exempted from the opening round of the qualifiers and were due to face Guinea in the next phase. The withdrawal of the Syli National has now handed Valentine Nguéle’s side direct passage to the third round of the qualifying campaign.

The development also means the planned October training camp and gathering for the Lionesses will no longer take place. Cameroon will instead have to wait until the next FIFA international window in December 2026 to return to action.

The delay comes shortly after Cameroon’s historic triumph at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Lionesses were crowned African champions for the first time. The title also secured their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Olympic qualification campaign represents another major challenge for Nguéle’s team, with Cameroon now having additional time to prepare before discovering their next opponent.

The Lionesses will therefore turn their attention towards December, when they are expected to resume preparations for the next stage of their quest to reach the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
