Cameroon made a winning start to their Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over Comoros at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua on Thursday night.
David Roy Nyengue, Bryan Mbeumo and Danny Namaso scored for the Indomitable Lions, while Warmed Omari pulled one back for the visitors. The result gives Cameroon three points from their opening Group G fixture.
Cameroon dominated possession from the opening exchanges but had to wait until the 39th minute to break the deadlock. Nyengue, making his senior international debut, rose highest to meet Namaso’s delivery and headed Cameroon in front.
The hosts carried their advantage into half-time before quickly extending it after the restart. Mbeumo struck in the 48th minute to make it 2-0 and put Cameroon in firm control of the contest.
Comoros responded almost immediately. Omari reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 51st minute, giving the visitors renewed hope and forcing Cameroon to remain focused during the remainder of the second half.
The Indomitable Lions continued to create opportunities and eventually restored their two-goal advantage in the 81st minute. Namaso, who had already provided the assist for the opening goal, finished to make it 3-1 and effectively settle the contest.
Cameroon finished the match with 66 per cent possession and 24 attempts compared with Comoros’ seven, underlining their territorial dominance. However, only four of their attempts were on target, highlighting an area that David Pagou’s side can improve despite the convincing scoreline.
For Nyengue, the night was particularly memorable. The debutant not only scored his first international goal but helped Cameroon establish an early advantage in a competitive Group G campaign.
The victory puts Cameroon alongside Namibia at the top of Group G after the opening round, with the Indomitable Lions holding the advantage on goal difference after Namibia’s result against Congo. Cameroon will now turn their attention to their next qualifier away to Congo on September 29.
