World decathlon champion Leo Neugebauer has arrived in Cameroon as part of a UNICEF-backed outreach programme aimed at supporting schoolchildren across the country.
Neugebauer, who won gold at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, is taking time off his competitive schedule to engage with local communities and inspire the next generation. The 24-year-old is visiting several schools, participating in sports activities and delivering motivational talks.

Born in Germany to a Cameroonian father and German mother, Neugebauer represents Germany in international athletics but maintains close ties to his Cameroonian roots.
“Coming here is special,” he told local media during a school visit in Yaoundé. “My father is from Cameroon, and giving back in this way means a lot to me.”
Neugebauer rose to global prominence following his silver-medal performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, before going on to claim world championship gold the following year in Tokyo.
His trip to Cameroon is being conducted in partnership with UNICEF and local education authorities, focusing on promoting physical education, youth empowerment, and access to schooling.
UNICEF Cameroon hailed his involvement, calling him “a role model for young people across Africa and beyond.”
Neugebauer is expected to remain in Cameroon for several days before returning to Europe to prepare for the upcoming indoor athletics season.
