Rising Cameroonian forward Angel Yondjo Matam continued his impressive scoring form in the French lower division over the weekend, finding the net for Lille’s reserve team despite their 1–2 defeat away to Metz.
The 18-year-old striker, who joined Lille last summer, was the lone scorer for his side in Sunday’s encounter. Although his goal couldn’t prevent defeat against a more experienced Metz outfit, Yondjo’s performance once again underlined his growing reputation as one of Cameroon’s most promising young talents.
Having signed a five-year contract with Lille, Yondjo is currently honing his skills within the club’s youth setup as he adapts to life in France.
Club sources indicate that the youngster is being carefully developed for a gradual promotion to the Lille first team, a pathway similar to that of his compatriot Carlos Baleba, who also rose through Lille’s ranks before securing a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League.
Back home, Yondjo is already a familiar name among football fans. A prolific scorer in domestic youth competitions, he earned widespread recognition after winning the Golden Boot at the Under-17 Youth Tournament in Limbe in January 2022. His international résumé is equally impressive, having represented Cameroon at U-15, U-17, U-20, and intermediate levels.
Yondjo also scored on his debut for Cameroon’s intermediate national team during their 2–1 loss to the Central African Republic in the CHAN 2025 qualifiers, further showcasing his natural eye for goal.
With his steady progress in France, many observers believe it’s only a matter of time before Angel Yondjo Matam breaks into Lille’s senior squad — and perhaps becomes the next Cameroonian star to make waves across Europe.
