Martin Hongla to miss Brazil showdown

Cameroon’s coach Rigobert Song Bahanak will have to do without regular midfielder Martin Hongla Yma II in their all-important 2022 FIFA World Cup clash against five times world champions – Brazil on Friday.

The Hellas Verona midfielder who started the first two games of the tournament for the indomitable Lions is still recovering from the ankle problem he sustained in the 3-3 draw against Serbia last Monday.

Hongla missed two days of training since then and awaits a last minute clearance from the medical staff to determine his availability for the game.

However, Song doesn’t have too much headache from the situation as former Manchester City midfielder Olivier Ntcham who was expected to be a starter at this tournament before injuries set in, has fully recovered and can perfectly fit the role Hongla had in the first two games.

Star man Zambo Anguissa, Kunde Malong and Olivier Ntcham are expected to partner in the Cameroon midfield though Hongla could be thrown in later in the game if need be.

Hongla is however expected to be fully-fit for the round of 16th clash against Portugal, if the Indomitable Lions secure qualification from the group.

Cameroon meets Brazil for the third time in the history of the competition, hoping to draw inspiration from the Olympic games triumph in 2000 or the 1-0 win in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup.

The game kicks off at 10PM at the Lusail Stadium and Brazil will also be without Neymar Jr, Alex Sandro and Danilo Montero due to varied injuries.
