Cameroon’s U20 Lions rounded off their group-stage campaign at the UNIFFAC U20 tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Central African Republic at the Olembe Stadium, thanks to a brace from Samuel Fonyuy Achu.

The Cameroonian striker scored both goals to secure all three points for the hosts in their final group match, finishing the group stage in impressive fashion as the young Lions turned their attention to the semi-finals.

Fonyuy Achu’s double took his tally to four goals, making him the competition’s leading scorer heading into the knockout stage. His goalscoring form will be an important asset for Cameroon as they pursue their ambition of qualifying for the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, scheduled for February and March.

The young Lions will face the second-placed team from Group B in the semi-finals, with DR Congo and Gabon in contention for that position. A draw scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Monday will determine which of the two sides finishes second and takes on Cameroon in the last four.

The semi-final will carry enormous significance for the hosts, as victory would secure qualification for the U20 AFCON. Cameroon are eager to return to the continental showpiece after missing out on consecutive editions, making the UNIFFAC tournament a crucial opportunity to revive their presence among Africa’s best young sides.

With home support behind them and Fonyuy Achu in scoring form, the young Lions will now focus on overcoming their semi-final opponents and moving one step closer to Ghana 2027. Their next match could prove decisive in determining whether Cameroon’s hopes of returning to the continental stage become reality.
