When Cameroon’s latest 26-man squad for the September and October international window was announced, one detail stood out beyond the names selected: three of the country’s central defenders share the same football roots.
Emmanuel Moungam Ngon, Samuel Kotto and Duplex Tchamba Bangou all passed through TAD Sports Academy, the Yaoundé-based football academy founded in 2013 and led in player development by coach Michel Didier Tadoun. Their presence in the Indomitable Lions squad provides another striking illustration of the academy’s contribution to the development of Cameroon’s defensive talent.
TAD Sports Academy has produced several players over the years, but its success story is particularly compelling when it comes to defenders. From Cameroon’s domestic championship to European football and now the Brazilian top flight, a growing number of defenders who passed through TAD have gone on to build professional careers.
One of the most prominent names is Duplex Tchamba Bangou. The central defender was developed at TAD before earning a move to France, where he joined Strasbourg in 2017. His career has subsequently taken him through different stages of European football before crossing the Atlantic. Today, Tchamba is playing in Brazil, where he represents Clube do Remo in the country’s top flight. He has also been part of the Cameroon national team and featured at the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
Samuel Kotto is another major product of the TAD defensive pipeline. After being groomed at the academy, Kotto spent six years at Apejes de Mfou before making the move abroad. His career took him to Sweden with Malmö and later through Belgium before his progression continued in France.
Kotto has also established himself as one of the most exciting young defenders in the Cameroon national team. At the last Africa Cup of Nations, he emerged as one of the Indomitable Lions’ revelations, earning widespread praise for his maturity and performances at the heart of the defence. His progress has continued at club level, and he has already scored once this season in France.
Then comes Emmanuel Moungam Ngon, another defender whose football journey began at TAD. Ngon was subsequently groomed at Options Sports Academy before continuing his career with Victoria United. He helped Victoria United become champions of Cameroon before securing a move abroad, first joining Danish club Horsens and later moving to Sweden, where he now plays for Landskrona BoIS.
Ngon’s journey is another example of TAD’s ability to provide young defenders with the foundations required to make the transition from academy football to the professional game and, eventually, the international stage.
The list does not end there. Ismaël Yandal is another name associated with the TAD production line and one who has already tasted success abroad. Yandal was part of the Aris Limassol side that became champions of Cyprus in 2023, adding another league title to the growing list of achievements by players who have passed through the Yaoundé academy.
And there is Alfred Mbita, another defender whose development is part of the wider TAD story. His emergence adds further weight to the argument that the academy’s work has not only been about producing footballers, but also about constructing defenders with the qualities needed to progress into professional football.
What makes the current generation particularly remarkable is the diversity of their journeys. Tchamba has played in France and Brazil, Kotto has moved through Cameroon, Sweden, Belgium and France, while Ngon has followed a path through Cameroon, Denmark and Sweden. Yandal has tasted championship success in Cyprus, while other TAD graduates continue to make their own journeys through professional football.
Yet, behind all those different careers is a common denominator: TAD Sports Academy and Michel Didier Tadoun.
Founded in 2013, TAD has spent more than a decade developing young footballers in Yaoundé. Its latest success story is perhaps best illustrated by the Cameroon national-team squad, where three of its former central defenders have simultaneously earned selection.
For an academy, having one graduate reach the senior national team is an achievement. Having three defenders from the same academy in the same Indomitable Lions squad is a statement.
It is also a reflection of the importance of specialised player development. Central defenders require years of education in positioning, anticipation, tackling, aerial ability, ball distribution and game reading. The journeys of Tchamba, Kotto and Ngon suggest that TAD has developed a strong foundation for producing players in that position.
Cameroon has long been renowned for producing outstanding defenders, from the generations of legendary centre-backs who established the country’s reputation on the African and world stages to the modern players now competing across Europe and beyond. TAD Sports Academy is increasingly adding its own chapter to that tradition.
From Tchamba Bangou to Strasbourg and the Brazilian top flight, Kotto Samuel to Malmö and France, Moungam Ngon from Victoria United to Denmark and Sweden, and Yandal Ismaël to a championship-winning campaign with Aris Limassol, the evidence is becoming difficult to overlook.
TAD Sports Academy is not simply developing footballers. It is building a defensive tradition.
And with three of its graduates now part of David Pagou’s latest Indomitable Lions squad, the Yaoundé-based academy has a compelling claim to being one of Cameroon’s new homes for the construction of central defenders.
