- Union Sportif of Abong Mbang beat Volcan of Noun 3-2 in post-match penalties to return to Elite Two
- Volcan of Noun failed for the second year running and will be back in the West Regional championship next season
Union Sportif of Abong Mbang are back in the MTN Elite Two championship for the first time in over 20 years.
The Americans as they are fondly called secured their qualification this Friday in a pulsating first semi-final game against favourites Volcan of Noun at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium in Yaoundé.
The East Regional League of FECAFOOT champions for the second year in succession corrected the errors of last season by defeating Volcan of Noun 3-2 in a nail-bitting contest that was decided by post-match penalties after 120 minutes of football left both sides leveled on a 1-1 score.
Volcan won their group and entered the semi-final with full confidence. Hassan Tcheutchoua put the Westerners ahead after eight minutes, but Abong Mbang guided by coach Mifoum Michel didn’t chicken out.
Émile Bertrand Medjo brought life to the whole of the East when he equalized for Abong Mbang.
The late goal meant Referee Ngale Njuma had to cause both teams to head into prolongation to seek a winner.
Unfortunately for both sides they failed to take their extra time chances leading to the use of post-match penalties to decide the winner.
The two teams missed their opening penalties but the turning point came when keeper Brice Penka missed the third penalty and Volcan of Noun couldn’t recover from it.
The last penalty miss from Volcan and perfectly taken kick for Abong Mbang secured their promotion and brought an end to so many years of failure in the interpools.
