Cotonsport of Garoua barged their way back into the MTN Elite One title playoff race with a 4-1 victory over table toppers UMS of Loum in a top fixture at the Roumde Adjia stadium on Sunday.

A brace from former FC Nantes forward Aziz Basane, a goal from Triomphe Kokolo and a Frank Nyobe own goal inflicted UMS’ biggest defeat of the season and moved the defending champions up to second, within two points of leaders Canon, as their revival under Jean Baptiste Bisseck continued.

Former New Stars of Douala defender Franck Achille Nyobe put the ball past Camille Noah Ombodo just four minutes after kick-off, making the mess of a wicked cross from Aziz.

The early goal settled the nerves of the hosts as despite the efforts to level Coton kept their slim advantage till the interval.

Just like the first segment, Coton enjoyed another good phase of the game upon resumption. Bisseck’s men scored twice within eight minutes to completely dash hopes of a UMS comeback in the second half.

Aziz made it 2-0 just a minute into the second segment before Kokolo added the third.

The 53rd minute goal from the Congolese midfielder was followed by a fourth from Aziz who completed his brace within 18 minutes.

UMS pulled one back through substitute Yann Chris Mpay with lots of time left.

However, Coton led by skipper Che Malone defended well for the final 22 minutes and bagged all three points to return to the second position on the log.

The win takes Coton’s tally to 30 points from 18 games, two points of leaders Canon with two games to go.

Cotonsport will face relegation-threatened PWD of Bamenda and Stade Renard of Melong in their final two games of the season.
